The UK advertising business is diverse and
heterogeneous. It contains a wide range of different
media: local, regional, national and international;
similarly advertisers vary enormously and have very
different communication needs. There also exists a
wide variety of agencies, research companies and
other professional organisations and individuals.
This diversity is reflected in industry structures and
a substantial number of trade associations who
represent the particular interests of their sectors.
For practitioners in the business, let alone those
outside who observe and comment on it, this can
be very confusing.
The Advertising Association is unique in representing
the mutual interests of the whole industry. This
presentation explains what the AA is, what it does
and what it is for.

The Authors' Licensing & Collecting Society is the
British Rights management society for all writers.
Its principal business is to distribute fees to writers
whose work has been copied, broadcast or recorded.
ALCS was set up in 1977 in the wake of the campaign
to establish the public lending right in the UK to help
writers protect and exploit their collective rights. Since
then it has paid writers over £50 million in fees - most
of which they would not have been able to collect
independently. The Society is a non-profit, non-union

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) is an
independent body which was originally established by
the film industry in 1912. This was because local
authorities were imposing their own, widely varying
censorship of films under legislation intended to give
them controls over safety standards in cinemas.
Local Authorities, from early on, accepted the decisions
of the Board. There are obvious benefits to Local
Authorities as well as to the film industry in having a
central body like the BBFC to bring consistency to the
classification process, but still remain independent of
both, and to accept responsibility for decisions taken.

as an operational alliance - The MCPS-PRS Alliance
- in order to make the best use of their individual
strengths. Both societies had been aware for some
time that there was wide acceptance across the music
industry of a need for close collaboration between
them. There was (and still is), among composers and
publishers, a shared business vision for the progressive
establishment of a world class rights administration
organisation in the UK; and the impact of the new users
of copyright material, with huge resources and reason
to place pressure on creators' rights, made it
increasingly important that rights organisations should
be very strongly placed to represent their members'
rights to full effectiveness in a competitive future.
