The CPS is the Government Department which
prosecutes people in England and Wales who have
been charged by the police with a criminal offence.
We are completely independent of the police although
we work closely with them at all times. We were
created by the Prosecution of Offences Act 1985 and
were fully operational by October 1986. Following the
publication of the Review of the CPS by Sir Iain
Glidewell (the "Glidewell Report") in June 1998, in
April 1999 the CPS moved from 14 to 42 Areas. Each
Area lines up with the existing Police Force boundaries
apart from CPS London which covers the forces of the
City of London Police and the Metropolitan Police.
Within each Area are one or more Branch offices
handling local prosecutions and headed by a Branch
Crown Prosecutor. In 1997-98, the Branches dealt with
1.4 million cases in the Magistrates' Courts and 128,064
in the Crown Courts.

IOSH has traditionally been a professional body for

joined the Institution thereby increasing the range of
expertise across the membership. The complementary
activities of a professional body, "learned society" and
responsibility for individual levels of skill and
competence, can therefore be extended to occupational
health and workplace environmental management -
probably in partnership with others - thereby widening
the Institution's technical base.

of the three police forces that operate in Greater
London. (The other two being the City of London Police
and the British Transport Police) It was founded by
Sir Robert Peel in 1829. The original establishment

Charing Cross and a population of less than 2 million.
Today, the Metropolitan Police Service employs

and, since the realignment of police boundaries in April
2000, it covers an area of 620 square miles and a

Devolution means immediate changes to government
in Northern Ireland. The new arrangements and the
responsibilities of each new government department
can be seen on the website. Although the structure
has changed and some functions have moved from
the control of one department to another, there will be
no immediate change in the way services are delivered.
The great majority of offices dealing directly with the
public will continue at the same address and the same
telephone number, even if they become part of a new
department.
